India lags behind SL and Pak in Air penetration
According to Assocham-Ernst and Young joint study published in Times of India, shows that aviation sector in India may be witnessing boom but the truth is on an average 1,000 Indians take 20 air trips a year.
This figure is 60 in China and 2300 in US. Infact india’s air penetration levels are lower the Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Ethiopia and Nigeria. In Sri Lanka and Pakistan the average air travel is around 30 as compare to 20 of India.
Assocham president Venugopal N Dhoot said the basic reason for this is the “absence of proper infrastructure” including airports, air traffic control and navigational facilities.
The study shows that 40 % of passenger traffic in India is concentrated in Delhi and Mumbai. The top five airports in India account for over 70% of traffic and the top 25 account for almost 95% of the air traffic here. This is despite the fact that India has more than 400 airports which can be connected by air and currently less than 100 are in regular use.
