World’s largest diamond-7,000 carats claims SA mining firm
A South African mining firm has claimed to have discovered the world’s biggest-ever diamond. The giant gem is said to be about 7,000 carats—which would be twice the size of the Cullinan Diamond, centrepiece of the British crown jewels.
The gem, which is about the size of a coconut and has a greenish tinge, may spark a bidding war among buyers worldwide and could fetch up to $20 million. Although the find has electrified diamond firms, the circumstances of the discovery are shrouded in mystery.
Brett Joli, a spokesman for the mining house, said the diamond was being rushed to a bank vault in Johannesburg and would be kept there for a couple of days.
